Free Eye Test In Scotland

It was announced in 2006 that everyone living in Scotland would recive a free eye test through the NHS

Changes to the eye test:

  • The traditional NHS sight test has been replaced by a comprehensive eye test.
  • The new NHS eye test is not just an eye test for spectacles but an eye health assessment, appropriate to patients needs and presenting signs and symptoms.
  • The new test is free to all patients where as before certain categories of patients were required to pay.

As well as a free eye test, you may also be entitled to some help with the purchase of glasses or contact lenses, if you are:

  • Under 16 or under 19 and still in full time education
  • In need of complex lenses
  • Receiving Income Support or Income Based Job Seekers Allowance, Working Tax Credit/Child Tax Credit (and are named on a NHS Tax Credit Exemption Certificate)
  • You are named on a valid HC2 or HC3 certificate
